The Vehicle Philosophy Cheat Sheet

The car in your driveway is one of the largest wealth decisions you'll ever make — and almost everyone gets it backwards. Keep this in the glovebox.

The Golden Rule: Pre-2005, no CVT, no TIPM, a solid body and frame → repairing almost always beats replacing. A well-kept older vehicle you fix is dramatically cheaper than any new — or newer — one you finance.

Why the window is real

Two milestones changed everything

1996

OBD-II became mandatory

A standardized diagnostic port and codes across every make. Anything 1996 and newer is far easier to scan, diagnose, and fix than what came before.

2008

CAN-only mandate

From model-year 2008, light vehicles had to run a single fully-networked protocol — the point where swapping major parts increasingly needs dealer-level programming.

The sweet spot lives between those two lines — easy to diagnose, simple enough to repair without a dealership. Watch for these expensive traps that crept in as the window closed:

Ram 1500	2005 & back	Best is 1994–2001. 2006+ introduces the TIPM power module — centralized failure points and module programming.
Toyota Tacoma	1995–2004	1st-gen, DIY-friendly era. 2005+ still durable, just more networked.
Toyota Tundra	2000–2006	1st-gen is the simple window; 2007+ gets much more sophisticated.

Honda Accord	2002 & back	Most analog era. 2003–2007 adds electronic throttle (V6 first, 4-cyl by '06).
Ford Crown Victoria / Grand Marquis	1998–2011	Body-on-frame Panther platform. Overbuilt, endlessly repairable — the reason it ran taxi and police fleets for decades.
GM sedans (Impala, etc.)	2005 & back	Avoids the AFM and network layers that arrive by 2007.
Nissan (Altima / Sentra)	1996–2002	Conventional automatics. Avoid the CVT-heavy 2003–2010 years — Nissan extended those warranties for a reason.

Most bulletproof vehicle ever built: the 1998–2002 Toyota Corolla (1.8L, 4-speed auto or manual). Cable throttle, timing chain, no CVT, minimal electronics, cheap parts, infinite longevity.
